The Intellectual and Archival Legacy of Piero Sraffa in the rehabilitation of Classical and Marxian Political Economy

Scott Carter is Professor of Economics at the University of Tulsa. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the New School for Social Research. His research focuses on political economy, the history of economic thought, and Sraffian economics. He has published widely on Piero Sraffa, value and distribution, and the Cambridge capital controversies in journals such as Review of Political Economy, Journal of Post Keynesian Economics, Research in Political Economy, and the Journal of the History of Economic Thought. He is also the creator of the Digital Sraffa project, an online arrangement and transcription of the Sraffa Papers.

Piero Sraffa was one of the most important yet least widely known economists of the twentieth century. His 1960 book Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities was a watershed in economics. Against neoclassical theory, Sraffa showed the weakness of the mainstream concept of capital; in relation to Marxian theory, he reopened the question of whether the labor theory of value was redundant.

Drawing on archival materials from the Sraffa Archive, this presentation traces Sraffa’s intellectual legacy and shows how his theoretical developments contributed to the rehabilitation of Classical and Marxian political economy.
